Hitachi EX40U Mini excavator

$

I am looking to buy a mini excavator to use around my home (not for business). A local guy has a Hitachi EX40U that he may want to sell. My question is that everything seems to work and it runs great but currently the boom will not lower using the controls, it will slowly leak off and lower but not with the controls. I am thinking /hoping it is a safety switch or hydraulic control valve but nothing serious. Also what would this machine be worth? I know condition means everything but a ball park would be great. Are parts available? Any info good or bad would be great.

Thanks

Reviving a 301.8

So new to the forum!
I just picked up a tired 301.8 and am hoping to revive it and put it to work around the property.
it has a fresh motor and runs strong, but all the bushings in the stick and bucket are pretty much shot, and it needs some cosmetic love to.

Having a hard time finding service manuals, diagrams and the maintenance manuals though.
Does anyone know where they can be found for cheap? I could understand paying big dollars if I was running a business fixing these, but I am on a tight budget and was hoping to do the work myself and cant stomach $700 for a manual, would rather put it into parts...

Already got all new bushings and pins coming in for the bucket linkage.

Whats the recommend oil for the hydraulic system and engine in these units?
Im heading to the CAT dealer tomorrow and am wondering if I should pay the CAT premium on their oil, or if something else is just as good and can be found for way cheaper...

thanks in advance!
Paul

Stick to bucket bushing removal on a CAT 301.8

Hi All,

looking for a bit of advice on how to get the lower stick to bucket pin bushings out on a 301.8

I got the stick to bucket linkage bushing out without much issue using a industrial ball joint press and a small slug of flat bar slipped it in from one side against the inside of one bushing and just pushed it out with the press, took all of 30min to do both.

then I got to the lower bushings and it seems as though the bushing is seated against a shoulder and there isnt enough exposed to push it out the same way.

Is there some sort of trick to getting them out? at this point I am almost ready to resort to a carbide cutter in a die grinder and just cut then out, but I dont want to damage the bore in the process.

also when I ordered my replacement bushings the parts guy didnt say anything about a seal on these, but when I took out the top 2 there is what looks like a metal seal of some sort. The parts drawing I have doesnt show anything there so wondering if someone with access to the specs could help me out.
machine SN is BFA01712

Thanks!
Paul

Case / New Holland 2.6 vs CAT 302.4

I am thinking of replacing my trusty Cat 301.8 with a slightly larger machine. Have looked at Volvo, Kubota, Wacker Neuson in audition to Case/NH and CAT. How is the "beer-can-shaped” Case/NH machine in practical use compared with the more conventional-shaped CAT? I think theese are the finalists due to their netter service organisasjon i the regions i operate in....

Hi I'm new to this sight here. but im looking for some info on a bobcat 435 mini excavator its a 2008 with around 3500 hours that i am looking to purchase. Everything seems to run great no power loss or anything like that but the only issue i am seeing with this machine is when you swing around and stop it makes a chattering noise and shutters when it comes to a stop. what could that possibly be? and is it something that should keep me from purchasing this piece of equipment? Thanks

Help locating grease line termination

I recently bought a used 325 Serial# 514015603. It was missing a few parts that I’ve now replaced, but the one I thought would be the easiest is killing me. There is a grease line for which I cannot find the termination. It starts at a zerk in the front by the boom. It’s #27 and #30 on the attached location or even a photo of where this line terminates?

Bobcat 337 Thumb

Is there a problem putting a thumb off a E80 on a 337. It's about 17 inches wide. I know I am going to have to get pins from a E80 and maybe the have some bushing made, but I don't want to go to the expense and the thumb be to big for the boom in relations to the stick and bucket. What your advice. Thanks

Swing component maintenance Kobelco 35sr-3

Guys,

I am brand new to the excavator world and always had backhoes. I recently purchased a 2006 Kobelco 35sr-3 mini ex with 1200 hours. The machine is in pristine condition and seems to have been very well maintained. I have read what I can find on the maintenance of these small excavators but there is one area I am having a little trouble finding info on and thats the swing components......bearing, swing motor etc. I can find the grease zerk for the bearing and have greased it with the ex in 4 different positions but I found some info online that there is likely another area where you are supposed to grease the gear of the swing motor. Can someone please educate me on this and any other items that are not obvious on these small excavators.

THanks

working on the slopes with a minidigger

What do you all suggest as a safe working slope principle for working a 3 ton minidigger.

The reason I ask is we have some streams to clear and they are along the side of a bank and will mean (in 95%) of cases having the digger on the lower side.

What worries me is how quick I will reach the point where working with the counterweight on the lower side/dipper higher side it tips over, just how safe are they?
Or better to approach the stream with the blade lower side and u/c at 90 degrees to the ditches....which will mean a lot of moving....and therefore might as well use the TLB

KUBOTA KX 121 Owners !

You guys that have one of these machines may want to pull the rubber floor mat ... pull the steel floor plate (Just lifts out on my new 121-3) & look down in on the far side of the floor ... at the hydraulic swivel head. (where all of your lower car hoses route thru {track motors, blade hoses**)
You are looking for the "Stay Bar" that keeps this swivel from rotating. It has about a 3 inch "C" on top of the swivel head with 3 bolts down into the swivel. It then bends down about 6 or 8 inches to the base plate & sets in a notch. This bar with a "C" made to the upper end of it is what keeps your swivel stationary & if it breaks it will twist all of the hoses up & break them. A friend of mine that bought his new KX 121 about a year ago had this happen to his about a month ago. Kubota paid to have it fixed (under warrantee) & gave him ... what was supposed to be a new improved updated "Stay Bar". It broke again last week & ate all the hoses again. This is a lot of hose work with the 6 way blade & drive motors.
The 3 bolt holes in the "C" broke out both times.
In Kubota's defense ... they just brought him a brandy new KX 040 in lieu of his 121. (Kubota's new replacement for the KX 121)

IHI 35n left drive not responding

$

05 35n. Used last weekend and everything worked well. Fired up this am and began working, all operations worked fine until I went to track. The left drive would not respond. I can here some type of pressure near the hydro's under the floor plate when I work the control. I don't believe it's the traction motor as it was rebuilt less than 100 hrs. My two speed did not work recently but began working again so I didn't think about it, unsure if its related. The drive would sometime be unresponsive right at start up but thought it was temp related. All valve unit. Any idea on where to start? Planetary? Stuck valve?

Volvo EC30 tracking speed

Is there a way to balance up the tracking speed on a Volvo EC30 mini excavator?

Mine seems to go marginally faster on the left side than the right.
The cab floor is free and clean from any obstructions, is it a linkage adjustment or a hydraulic pressure adjustment to bring it right?....do I screw the R.H side up or bring the L.H. side back?

Hi all,

Just wondering what type of hydraulic thumb i should get for my excavator, I will mainly be using it for clearing/ handling bushes, small trees and some rocks etc.

Caterpillar quoted me $3393 for a hydraulic thumb, can anyone recommend any other thumbs besides the caterpillar one?

Hi folks I've got on order a new Cat 305.5E2 which should arrive in a month. Just starting a new little business - also have a Hino 15t Tipper that I'll carry it around in.

I operated excavators for years (just the 10-30t range - Kobelcos) when I was younger but now am just going to run this on the side as I have a good fulltime job in IT (completely different I know!). Plan is to get my son and son-in-law operating the business.

The excavator is coming with a long stick, hydraulic quick hitch, 300, 450 600mm buckets, 1600mm tilt mud bucket, and a ripper. Oh and a thumb :) All the attachments are just the cat stuff. It has an airconned cab also.

Just a couple of "newb" questions if people can help;

1. Wondering about levelling systems - pricing ones like trimble and others they are like 25% of the cost of the excavator which is unaffordable to me. I can get the i-dig ("classic" 2d one) system in Australia for about $8k which is a lot less - just wondering if people have experience with these or have any other advice? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zu1LH4iWW0o

2. Wondering about the long stick and the thumb.. do people have similar setups and if so does the machine rock too much? Also will the thumb get in the way digging deeper trenches? Its a little bit wider than the 450mm (18"?) bucket which would be the main bucket for deeper trenching I'd think. If I had a big job just digging I guess it wouldn't be that hard to remove it?

3. My public liability insurance requires me to have used the governments "dial before you dig" service to be covered for damaging under ground utilities. I imagine on some jobs where i am working on someone elses project the might tell us "yep we've checked it all so you can go ahead". Just wondering do people get this in writing or something first? Just heard about a bad situation locally once where this happened when some poor fella augered a large shade post for a major car dealer in the city and went through the whole city's main optic fibre run! The client told the operator that it had all been checked and was right to go.

Any advice much appreciated :)
