Cat 304E2 CR First Impressions

Just got back from the mountain where I took delivery of a new Cat 304E2 CR. As usual I was trying to get months worth of work done in weeks. I was clearing a site and shooting lines in preparation for building a barn/workshop. I have a Cat 416C IT, Cat D3G, Cat 272D XHP, and now the mini on site. The mini got most of the use.

The mini has a manual quick attachment on it. In my mind this wedge system seems like it would be less prone to wear. The mini also has a hydraulic thumb on it, which was the most important feature that I wanted. I used the thumb to pull out and stockpile stone. I used the thumb to pick up and drop stumps to knock off the dirt and then stockpile them. I pulled the smaller stumps with the mini but used the 416 to pull the bigger stumps. The mini did alright, but it was obvious that the 416 weighed twice as much and twice the horse power. As I dropped trees I limbed them and made piles of the smaller limbs. A local gentleman came by every day with his truck. I loaded the piles of limbs into his truck and he hauled them off to his burn pile. Using the mini with thumb it took about 5 minutes to load the brush pile into his truck, a big work saver. I have a sawbuck with 16 inch divisions on it to cut logs into rounds. I used the mini to pick up the trunks and put them in the sawbuck. I cut up the trunks into 16 inch rounds as I went along. The mini proved itself useful for many tasks.

I have an apartment building in the city that I need to do work on. The 304 and the 272 are about the largest units that would be practical for this use. Once this work is done they will go back up to the mountain. I have about 5 thousand feet of stone wall that I want to rebuild and about 2 thousand feet of new stone wall that I want to build. I figure the mini will be ideal for this purpose.

Once I reset the controls to what I am used to on the 416, the mini became second nature to run. Having all the controls on the two joysticks makes the unit very productive. I am very enthused about this unit.

Changing the Oil in the Final Drive Gearbox

Did you know that a general rule of thumb is that the life of your final drive gearbox is proportional to how frequently the oil is changed? That’s why one of the important maintenance tasks for a final drive is to regularly check the oil on the planetary side. Ideally, you should check the oil level about once every 100 hours of operation, and change the oil out at least once a year.

Here are some tips to help you do this as painlessly as possible.

Leaky Bobcat

Hi,
I have an old x320 with a couple of leaks. I have traced the main one to the swivel joint, but there is another I'm having trouble with.
It appears to be in the area between the hydraulic drain and the bottom of the slew drive. I was using the machine yesterday and when I came to clean it along the box section on the right hand side under the digger it was covered in oil and it looked like oil had also sprayed out around the slew on the same side. I have cleaned it up and will have a look today to see if I can find any more clues.
Also there is a mystery leak that appears underneath in the middle, in front of the cover plate. I know the swivel joint is leaking, but this feels more like water rather than oil. It collects in the plate at the front and drips down, I am at a loss as it also drips when the machine isn't running. Any ideas?

Mitsubishi MM30SR Workshop Manuals

(Sorry for the double post, posted this under Excavators before I found Compact Excavators)

As with other posts I've seen here, I've pretty much exhausted my keyboard searching for technical info on the Mitsubishi MM30SR. I did find a few old threads here where someone had a copy of the workshop and wiring diagrams. Anyone know if I can still get my hands on those?

My current issue is a hydraulic leak, which I located yesterday, and it couldn't be in a worse place. Appears I'm going to have to remove the cab to get to the hose. I do have a PC120 so lifting the cab off won't be an issue. Just hoping for the manuals to speed up the process, as well as take care of some smaller issues I've been working around.

Thanks for any help or suggestions you may have.

BOBCAT E35 Replacement Rotary Joint

Hi there guys, I have put a previous post up here before regarding the "failure" of my rotary joint on my 2014 E35 twice in 880hrs, my dealer has repaired it again (new seals) I believe under warranty once again, I wont get into the details of what led to Bobcats change of heart to do the repair once again.

There seems to be suggestions that dirt or dust is getting past the lower seal and causing internal damage and premature seal failure, they wont tell me much more than that, I am guessing it's of sub-standard quality or I am just extremely unlucky?

I am hoping some one on this forum may have had some dealings with companies in the US that build aftermarket rotary joints, or even better still know of a company that does a replacement rotary joint, I am just nervous about the lifespan of this component now after my experience thus far, I don't really want to get rid of the machine as it's by far the best digging excavator I have ever owned in this weight bracket.

I was considering seeing if the dealer would supply me one of the failed ones and take it to notable hydraulic/engineering company and see if they could see why it's failing and may have some suggestions.

2005 IHI 45NX Excavator Running Rough with Loss of Power at Mid to High RPM

I bought this machine last year to do some work around my house. It's got 2900 hours on it. Ran like a champ when I got it. I've only put about 75 hours on it in over a year. I loaned it to a friend and when it came back it was running rough with a loss of power at mid to high RPM. It starts right up quickly and idles perfectly but when I increase the throttle, it gets rough and loses power. I'm trying to start troubleshooting this because I need to use the machine for some drainage work in the next month. This machine was the Isuzu 2.2l 4LE2 motor. I have ordered new air, fuel and oil filters and will be installing them next week. I'm hoping it's just something simple like a clogged air filter but we'll see.... If anyone has any input on how to diagnose this issue, I'd be very grateful.

Expert opinions on 80 size excavators

Hi All
Im not really in the market at the moment but thinking down the road of purchasing an 80 size excavator. I would probably not buy a new machine but for the sake of argument lets say the machine is new. Im not worried right now about the dealer support, warranty, or financing points. Im just curious to get everyones take on the performance, reliability, and resale values assuming the machine was owned for 5 years.
I havent ran too many different sizes of these machines but of the few i have ran i would say i like the takeuchi the best. They seem like the best of price and performance out there. I have also ran the cat 308 machines but didnt really care for those.... didnt seem like they had any power and the Deere machines seemed slower and was hard to fine finish things. Other than that i have never ran anything else... i would like to run a Komatsu pc88 they seem very very nice.

Where to buy paint for an IHI

Anyone know where I can get paint for my IHI 45NX? Yes, it's those terrible aqua green and blue colors.

Kubota Mini questions

I been looking around at used machines and noticed that there are a LOT of the Kubota's out there with over 4000 hrs on the meter. I know I read a lot about over 3k is a lot of hrs on a mini, do the Kubota's seem to hold up better to higher hrs than say Bobcat or some of the other brands? Is there any "problems" specific to the Kubotas that I should be looking for (Planning on buying a much lower hr machine but just noticed a lot of high hr machines for sale)

Please explain excavator specs

I am new to excavators and I been looking at a minis and I am not too sure I understand the specs and could use a bit of help?
Here is an example of one set:
I. Max Cutting Height 15.4 ft in 4700 mm
J. Max Loading Height 10.4 ft in 3180 mm
K. Max Reach Along Ground 16 ft in 4880 mm
L. Max Vertical Wall Digging Depth

What is cutting height?
The max reach along the ground - dos this mean I could roughly reach out 15' to clean out a ditch (shallow)
What is a 2' flat bottom measurement? how is that derived? (some list it some don't)

THANKS

Bobcat E35i ?

Please share any experience with the E35i or reliable comments you have heard

CAT 301.8C Engine/Fuel Shut-off Soleniod

I have replaced a burned up solenoid for the engine/fuel shut off and the relay for the circuit. However, the line remains hot even after the key is removed. I do not have a wire diagram for this unit. I have also recently replaced the ignition switch. I have checked fuses. The only thing that kills power to the solenoid is for me to remove the relay from the fuse panel.

I figure there is something I am missing within the circuit, but the diagram I have for a larger piece of equipment does not show anything thing between the relay and the solenoid. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Bobcat E50

Hello all,

Purchased a Bobcat E50 this spring and just finished the 50 Hours service. Everything went well but the last time I ran the machine I noticed fluid build up around the radiator cores. Upon close inspection I concluded fluid was coming from the Hydro res breather cap. The fluid level seems to be in the correct level using the manuals procedure. I did notice that after running the machine for a while and loosening the breather cap the tank seems to have a lot of pressure built up. Not sure if this is normal or maybe the replacement breather cap is defective.

Any help would be appreciated

TB 260 Fuel Gauge

Just got a Takeuchi TB 260 cabed Excavator, it has six hours on it and the fuel guage in the Cab:Banghead reads full all the time. Any ideas would be appricated.

Thanks Richard

Non starting issue Takecuhi TB153FR

I have a 2006 Takeuchi TB153FR that i've owned for about a year and a half. Right since I owned it it wouldn't always start, but was consistent. Would always start after sitting for the night and was usually good for 3-5 starts before you'd have to leave it sit, sometimes as little as 1 hour and it would start. At one job it wouldn't start, tipped the cab forward tapped the starter started up. Assumed it was bad starter, replaced it worked fine for a bit (however since it was good for a few starts prior and I don't use the machine a lot it's hard to judge it). Then wouldn't start at a job first thing in morning, so took it to shop. They replaced the controller, worked good for about a month until it happened again. Left it overnight and fine again and been fine for about 3 months. But i'm always worried it's not going to start. When it won't start key cycles normally, but when I go to crank nothing. Last time it happened I swapped fuses around to see if no change.

Does anyone have any ideas? I've read there is some kind of harness you can plug together under the seat to by-pass some shutdowns? Since the starter and main electrical harness has been replaced I can't there being many other options? Hate going to a job and always having to leave it run, or only turn it off sitting a certain way incase it won't start and has to sit there for the night.

Other problem is the only dealer here and who did the work was terrible, so I want to fix it myself. Took them 3 weeks to replace it, and cost me $4,000 and ontop of that charging me $500 for a day rental of one of their machines :Banghead

Cat 305 C CR Rubber Tracks

Can anyone tell me how aftermarket rubber tracks hold up compared to Cat oem ?

Mini Ex uses????

Since I been shopping for a Mini Ex and I been doing a lot of research and was thinking I bet there is a lot of uses I am missing. Thought it maybe interesting to start a thread about the uses you have had for Mini Ex, be them "normal uses" or something a bit more unconventional. Photos are always welcome and encouraged!

E45 Falls way short of capability

I purchased a E45 - new about 2 months ago. Besides being in shop several times for (no hydraulic power, leaking hose, leaking hose again, extend hoe not working, short in electric system, and low power in tracks) I also have noticed that the machine is well under counter weight - the thing tips with 2 foot bucket of dirt and the bottom track frame flips around. I know I got a lemon, but I would not recommend E45 to anyone. I had E42 and it can dig so much more efficient than the E45. Just wondering is anyone else has had any issues with E45.

Events on 4th July!

G'day,

Decided after partly cleaning up years of disorder in my shed to just have a look at how hard it would be to move my new, second hand, lathe off the pallet and on to the floor of the shed. A matter of a few inches in height and a few feet sideways. So I got on the heavy end and lifted and it slid on the pallet top and I had it part over the edge of the pallet. I thought to myself at 62 I was able to handle this. Unfortunately that brain disengagement came at a cascade of costs. So I heaved and it turned to the side coming off the pallet OK but the bottom must have caught the middle timber and it tilted. Did I mention it was heavy? Yep - totaled the spare timber stand on the way down and made a noise that woke the family knowing I had met grief!

So not much time until rain and Sunset!!!!!!!!!! Went and got the chain and block to lift - knocked the tape measure off its little table and it went to pieces!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh well. Went and got the Mini Exc and trundled around and managed to get the boom inside the shed to lift the lathe backup. No there was no way of lifting it really any other way. Besides oil was spilling out from the horizontal angle and who knows what other damage I had done.

So with lifting strap - I had thought of this before but thought I would save time and I had moved it a distance by strength alone. I clearly underestimated how little tilt it took to have this thing go awry. Managed to get it back up and had to very gently put it back down and nudge it away from first contact as it was still unsteady. Certainly any thought of not having it bolted down when settled in its place has truly passed.

So I went to take the mini back to the shed. What is that fluid coming out the bottom of the mini all over the place!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Some further stress molecules were released and I popped the rear hood and poked around. No fluid when off but copious amounts when running. Found it - diesel coming from a filter assembly with the presumingly press fitted alloy insert still tight to the hose but not connected to the filter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Parked it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Went and observed the carnage. Broke the mount for the elec motor and the belt drive on the lathe is - well I will need some advice on welding castings soon? Also broke a handle off the other end but that should not be so heart breaking to repair.

How was your 4th of July?

Should have picked the citrus fruit like I had planned but my few remaining male hormones took control.

Hope tomorrow is different/better, no complaints just feeling less than 'good',

Regards, MX45
